NiSource Inc. is an energy conglomerate operating as a regulated utility across the United States, specializing in natural gas and electricity. The company's activities are primarily divided into two main segments: Gas Distribution Operations and Electric Operations. Through its Gas Distribution division, NiSource supplies natural gas to a substantial customer base, including approximately 853,000 clients in northern Indiana, and an additional 2.4 million residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland. This extensive network is facilitated by roughly 54,600 miles of main distribution pipelines (including individual customer service lines) and a further 1,000 miles of transmission main pipelines. The Electric Operations segment is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, serving about 483,000 customers across 20 counties in northern Indiana. This division also engages in wholesale electric sales and transmission transactions. NiSource's power generation portfolio is diverse, comprising: Coal-fired stations: 722 megawatts (MW) in Wheatfield and 455 MW in Michigan City. A combined cycle gas turbine: 563 MW in West Terre Haute. Natural gas generating units: 155 MW in Wheatfield. Hydroelectric plants: 9 MW in Carroll County and 7 MW in White County. Wind energy installations: 102 MW and 302 MW, both located in White County, Indiana. Originally established in 1847 as NIPSCO Industries, Inc., the company underwent a name change to NiSource Inc. in April 1999. Its corporate headquarters are situated in Merrillville, Indiana.
